Good things about October in Salem... [Oct. 28th, 2006|08:34 am]
Yesterday a woman came into the gallery and stopped to chat with me.
She and her husband had come in back in August.
They had had a bad experience at another store and I cheered them up a little, gave them some suggestions on friendlier places to try around town and sent them on their way.
She brought me some candy and stopped in specifically just to say thank you.

Wow.
I was totally blown a way.
I like to think the folks at the shop are some of the nicest people around... but that really made my day!
Love my Job!

Mount Holyoke Lyon's Pride presents:
Psyches, Sirens, and Shoppers: Representing Women in American Art
a slide presentation by Marianne Doezema, director of the Mount Holyoke College
art museum
Sunday Nov 12, 6pm
Picklepot Gallery, 139 Washington St, Salem, Massachusetts

Paintings of the female figure became extremely popular in this county at
the end of the nineteenth century and in the first decades of the twentieth.
Often these images were idealized, presenting woman as the embodiment of
refinement and taste and the evocation of aesthetic beauty and spirituality. On
the other hand, I find most interesting those images that do not resort to
mythology or allegory. This slide talk focuses on images of contemporary women
during a period when the so-called feminine sphere was being negotiated in
written and verbal discourse and in visual images of all kinds.

Free admission, but donations toward the Jolene Fund
<http://www.mhlp.org/jolene> will be gratefully accepted. Mount Holyoke Lyon's
Pride is the network for lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, intersexed, and
queer alumnae/alumni, students, faculty and staff of Mount Holyoke College and
their partners.

"The jewelry that I design embraces centuries old chain making techniques, and enhances them with a touch of the present. All the viking knitting, wire and chain making is personally hand woven from precious metal wire. Each chain is created, one loop at a time from hand cut rings or precious metal wire. "

"Eleven years ago I came across references to these ancient weaving techniques while I was the Elliott Clan USA genealogist. While weaving these patterns I feel that a tangible connection to my Celtic ancestry. "

stitches, how to create tassels, switching from one color of yarn to
another, and more! During the final week, the squares will be joined
together to form the actual baby afghans. Knitters of all experience
levels are encouraged to attend. If knitters have their own needles and
yarn, they're welcome to bring them. If not, yarn and needles will be
provided at no cost for in-store use. Knitters can feel free to attend

Random thoughts on retailing [Aug. 15th, 2006|10:46 am]
[mood | thoughtful]
[music |Utah Saints]

I subscribe to a number of industry magazines and newsletters.
Retail is such a peculiar business, based so much on the perception of need and value, the whims of consumers and the psychology of the masses.

One article that struck me this morning in the Nation Retail Federation's newsletter was this one about food shopping.

Traditional grocery stores forcast to be less crowded )

What struck me about this one was the chasm that seems to be growing between segments of the population. The two store platforms expected to grow the most are the Wal-Mart bigger cheaper types, and the high end specialty earthy crunchy types.

I find it a little disturbing.

It's gonna be a good day! [Aug. 12th, 2006|07:57 am]
[mood | excited]

The weather is cooperating!
( for the first time all summer!)

I am excited about Bren coming in today.
We got some good press in the Salem Gazette.

Cafe Grazziani ( the little italian place next door) is running some fun events all day, including a spaghetti eating contest for kids that I suspect my oldest will make a serious attempt to win.
I might have to sneak away for a few minutes just to walk throught the Essex St. Fair.
There are so many cool things happening today.
Yeah...
it is gonna be a fun day!

The Mysterious Red Line [Aug. 5th, 2006|02:28 pm]
[mood | curious]

At some point between when I left the office last night, and this morning when I went back into work, the mysterious RED LINE was repainted through downtown Salem.

Not exactly sure how or when this happened, but it now run directly past my front door!

This has to be a good thing.
Perhaps someday, when I leave work, I will follow the Red Line and see where it goes!
